The inaugural British Council Award for ELT Writing is a £1,000 award that recognises an outstanding contribution by an English Language Teaching author or authors, and is administered by the Society of Authors.

The winner(s) will be announced at the Society of Authors’ Awards party in June 2012.

Criteria for entry

The work to be single volume or all components of one complete level (with illustrations or without), in book form, or in a variety of media, of genuine merit, and may be for any age group The work to have been first published in the UK, in the English language The work to have been published within the previous calendar year, 2011.

Conditions of entry

There will be three judges, working in education, in the fields of ELT authorship, applied linguistics teaching and teacher training. Judges’ works/levels may not be entered for the award.

Each UK publisher or imprint of a publisher may make two entries, but may also submit justifications of not more than 250 words for up to two further works/levels, which may be called in by the judges. Judges may call in works/levels if they so wish.

Any title submitted must possess an ISBN. The decision of the judges (both as to eligibility and the winning entry) shall be final. The judges reserve the right not to make the award if, in their opinion, no works/levels entered reach a sufficiently high standard.

For multi-author works/levels the prize will be divided equally between the authors.

For works/levels illustrated by a named illustrator the judges may divide the prize between the author and illustrator at their discretion.

Works/levels which are part of a multi-level series may be entered for the prize. However, if the prize has been awarded to a work/level which is part of a series, no further works/levels from that series may be submitted in future years, unless specifically requested by the judges.
