Matthew Alexander – Folklore
The customs, traditions, superstitions and beliefs of the rural poor can be described as the culture of the people. Social changes since the mid-19th century have transformed Surrey more than any other county. Enough has been recorded, though, to glimpse what its traditional culture was once like.
Matthew Alexander was Curator of Guildford Museum for over thirty years before recently retiring. He has published extensively on the history of Guildford and the social history of Surrey and has now been appointed Borough Remembrancer of Guildford.

Venue: The Mill Tavern, Liphook Road, Haslemere, GU27 3QE

  • If you would like to attend please inform local co-ordinator Diana Samways (tel. 01428 643021) by 4pm on the Friday before the Tuesday concerned.
